CPPCC begins its annual session

China's top political advisory body[1] has begun its annual meeting in Beijing. The national legislature[2] will also begin its annual meeting later this week.

More than 2,000 members of the National Committee[3] of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, or CPPCC, will discuss major political, economic and social issues during this year's session which will run until March 14. 

All the members of the politburo standing committee[4] attended the opening meeting in the Great Hall of the People[5]. Yu Zhengsheng, Chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, delivered a report on the work of the CPPCC National Committee's Standing Committee over the past year[6].

He said the committee has focused on the central task of economic development and carried out investigative studies and political consultations in line with[7] the 13th Five-Year Plan[8]. 

"We put the main thrust[9] of our work serving the overall interets of the country on the making of suggestions and proposals for the formulation of the 13th Five-Year Plan,"

"We carried out 56 inspections, studies, and consultations as part of our in-depth research on a number of significant issues downward pressure on China's economy and improving the country's macro-control policies," said Yu.
