2017 年，全球 45 个国家中有 8300 万人需要紧急粮食援助， 比 2015 年增加 70％ 以上。持续脆弱和冲突，大规模流离失所，气候变化和自然资源退化的复杂组合继续加剧了全世界数百万人的粮食不安全状况。未来 15 年，全球食品需求预计将上涨至少 20％。

1990年至2014年间，二氧化碳排放量增长了60％。 近三年来，全球排放量已经趋于平稳，但近期又开始回升。

在塞拉利昂和哥伦比亚，数百人在暴雨后死于泥石流。最近几年发生的自然灾害（10 多人死亡或 100 多人受灾）的数量是 20 世纪 60 年代的 4 倍多。

人力资本占全球财富的大约 65％。但是，在低收入国家，只有 41％ 的财富是人力资本。随着国家的增长，人力资本的份额变得更加重要。在其他挑战中，技术的加速要求各国如果希望在未来的经济中竞争，就要紧急投资于人民。

「2018 年世界发展报告」认为，各国间甚至其内部的教育质量差异很大。在最贫穷的国家，只有不到五分之一的小学生精通数学和阅读。20 世纪 80 年代在撒哈拉以南非洲一些低收入或脆弱的经济体中出生的成年人中，约有 12％ 的受教育程度高于其父母，而东亚部分地区同一代人的受教育程度则超过 80％。

在南亚和撒哈拉以南非洲地区，15-24 岁的人口数量稳步上升，2015 年达到 5.25 亿人，几乎占全球青年人口的一半。新的研究发现，随着互联网接入的增加，人们渴望获得比以前更高的收入。仅在非洲，2015 年底，互联网连接了 12 亿人的 2.26 亿部智能手机。

从全球来看，超过十亿人依靠森林谋生，森林每年价值超过 6000 亿美元。但世界正在经历生物多样性的巨大损失。根据 IUCN 的数据，  世界上近四分之一的哺乳动物物种已知在全球范围内受到威胁或灭绝。
