各位可以把这篇文章看成一本Handbook/Dictionary，而不仅是一篇论文。因为它：

1.提供了关于agency分析十分丰富的词汇

2.梳理了agency当代研究与哲学渊源的很多人名（甚至有柏格森、牛顿、康德）

3.提供了agency不同侧面链接到的不同专题经验研究（比如life coursestudies，new institutionalism,social movement studies）

4.呈现了agency的一些理论争论，比如Archer和Giddens之间的conflation争议、Sewell(1992)改造是否合理等等。

一、什么是agency？先砸你一头定义！

human agency as a temporally embedded process of social engagement, informed by thepast (in its habitual aspect), but also oriented toward the future (as a capacity to imagine alternative possibilities) and toward the present (as a capacity to contextualize past habits and future projects within the contingencies of the moment).

人类能动性是社会卷入的时间化镶嵌过程。这种社会卷入由过去而启（在它的习惯维度中），也导引着未来（作为一种想象未来可能性的能力）和现在（作为一种面向过去的习惯与面向未来的谋划脉络于当下时刻的偶连性之中的能力）。

读者可以看到，Emirbayer and Mische看重三个方面

1.temporally：时间

2.embedded：关系

3.capacity：能力

二、学界有哪些问题？为什么需要这个定义？

这样看，时间（过程）、关系、能力，有内有外。那么它到底提出这么长的定义，是为了解决什么样理论问题呢？

Emirbayerand Mische说，agency研究面临两种倾向：

1.Bourdieu and Gidden的实践理论取向，重the role of habitus and routinizedpractices

2.理论选择与现象学：goal seeking and purposivity, , while theories of publicity and communication, as well as certain feminist theories, have overemphasized deliberation andjudgment.

3.还有一些新的尝试，比如James Coleman，失败之处在于“理性”何以诠释意义上成为可能，将时间也抽象化处理，这意味着agency仍是个black box。JeffreyAlex也是一例，但他但仍没有分析时间性。

为此，他才会想要讨论从时间上谈得周全——三个维度：routine, purpose, and judgment，并且将contexts of action和action联系起来——whenone or another is conflated with agency itself, we lose a sense of the dynamic interplay among these dimensions and of how this interplay varies within different structural contexts of action

 为完成这样的任务，E. and A. 从Mead的那本小册子《现在的哲学》吸收不少资源（记得这本书还是我在复旦北门一个小书店等人，结果人还没等人书就没翻完了~确实是很薄很小。第一次看的李猛老师的译文~）

三、

回应上面的定义，包括以下三个方面：

第一，重述/过去/例行/稳固

The iterational element …It refers to theselective reactivation by actors of past patternsof thought and action, as routinely incorporatedin practical activity, thereby giving stability andorder to social universes and helping to sustain identities, interactions, andinstitutions over time.

第二，筹划/未来/创造/再形塑

The projective element… the imaginative generation by actorsof possible future trajectories of action, inwhich received structures of thought and action may be creatively reconfigured in relation to actors’ hopes, fears, and desires for thefuture.

第三，实践—评估/现在/回应/可能性

 Thepractical-evaluative element… It entails the capacity ofactors to make practical and normative judgments among alternative possible trajectories of action, in response to the emerging demands,dilemmas, and ambiguities of presently evolving situations

从重述/过去/例行/稳固维度来看，它涉及到如何对知识库存的“操作”，要范畴化定位、选择性关注以及期望维持。（Selective attention/Recognition of types/Maneuver among repertoires/Expectation maintenance）

——这方面的经验案例包括文化社会学中的名篇Swidler (1986)culturaltoolbox，生活历程研究中的两大名著：Thomas and Znaniecki (1918)Glenn Elder（1974）。

从筹划/未来/创造/再形塑来看，能动性涉及到运用知识库去想象未来，建立因果与时间序列，找到新的可能性，并将这些可能性放在语义创新之中，再用假设去想象地解决冲突，以及在t在想象与行动的界限上，去尝试地新互动。（Anticipatory identification/Narrative construction/Symbolic recomposition/Hypothetical resolution/Experimental enactment）

——这方面的经验案例研究包括Time perspectives：生命历程研究中how personalconceptions about past and future are transformed at key moments of transitionand/or crisis，Framing processes：集体行动框架的形成研究以及Institutional innovation：新制度主义

最后，从实践—评估/现在/回应/可能性角度来看，继承的过去与想象的未来在现在之中必然面临着模糊、无法安定的置疑感，但又要将这些问题化的情况安置到相应的类型之中使之特征化才能得到理解。在这样的过程中，行动者不得不沈思其中，做出决定，并且执行。（Problematization/Characterization/Deliberation/Decision/Execution）

——这方面的经验研究包括政治决策研究、抗争研究。

四、作者最后还用他们的agency定去回应了关于structure and agency的争论，比如Archer与Giddens之间的fallacyof central conflation，以及Sewell1992的结构概念中对agency忽视的问题。
