1. Access before Importation
China implements access assessment for 8 major categories of products:  meat, dairy products, aquatic products, bird's nest, casings, plant-derived foods, Chinese herbal medicines, and bee products. The General Administration of Customs evaluates and reviews the food safety systems of countries/regions that export related foods to China. Only those which fully meet the requirements of the Chinese regulations can be imported.
For foods not included in these 8 categories, the Customs implements a registration system for overseas food production enterprises. The General Administration of Customs will organize an expert review team to review the enterprises that have submitted the application, and only if the examination is passed can they be approved for registration.
2. Prepare suitable Chinese labels
According to China's Food Safety Law, suitable Chinese labels should be attached to imported prepackaged food. The Chinese label shall indicate the product name, production date, ingredient list, origin and the name, address, contact information of the domestic agent/seller, etc.

3. Inspection and Quarantine
After the imported food arrives at the port, Customs will carry out an on-site inspection according to the requirements of supervision and management such as the risk control instruction, as well as sampling and inspection. After passing the comprehensive assessment of inspection and quarantine, Customs shall issue the "Inspection and Quarantine Certificate of Imported Goods" and approve the sale and use of the imported food
4. Follow-up Supervision after Importation
According to related regulations, importers should establish a food import and sales record system, and should truthfully record relevant information in writing or electronically to ensure that the entire process can be traced. Customs will carry out follow-up supervision of importers. For food importers who have failed to comply with the above-mentioned requirements, they may face warnings, fines, and even orders to cease business.
