The University of Nottingham Ningbo was established in 2004 with the approval of the Ministry of Education. It is the first Chinese-foreign cooperative university in China with an independent campus and legal entity. It is also an important member of the global education system of the University of Nottingham in the UK. The university is committed to cultivating innovative senior talents who are based in China, have an international perspective and are qualified for the future. It enrolls undergraduate, master and doctoral students at home and abroad, with more than 9000 registered students from more than 70 countries and regions in the world. So far, Ningnuo has trained 14 undergraduate graduates and 15 master graduates, and has been recruiting doctoral students since 2009.

In 2019, the University of Nottingham Ningbo participated in the Soft Science China Best University Ranking for the first time, ranking 55th in China and 2nd in Zhejiang Province. The University of Nottingham Ningbo now has three schools: School of Technology, School of Business and School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Engineering science and social science general are ranked in the top 0.5% and 1% of the global Basic Science Indicators Database (ESI), respectively. The three disciplines of business administration, management and economics ranked 11th, 26th and 44th respectively among domestic universities (2021 Soft Science World Top Discipline Rankings). The University of Nottingham Ningbo is also the only Chinese-foreign cooperative university with three disciplines listed. The Business School is accredited by the European Quality Development Certification System (EQUIS), with a five-year accreditation of the highest standard. The Institute of Technology 10 undergraduate programs have obtained the international authoritative professional certification.

According to the data of 2021 undergraduate graduates from the University of Nottingham Ningbo, about 30% of the graduates who studied abroad went to the top ten universities in the world, and over 80% went to the top 100 universities in the world. About 75% of the graduates directly employed went to state-owned enterprises, government agencies, public institutions, Fortune 500 or well-known enterprises at home and abroad.
