德隆·阿西莫格鲁(Daron Acemoglu)出生于土耳其的伊斯坦布尔。他本科毕业于英国的约克大学(University of York),之后进入伦敦经济学院(London School of Economics)攻读博士学位。毕业后,他留校担任了一年的经济学讲师。1993年,阿西莫格鲁前往麻省理工学院(MIT)任职。阿西莫格鲁现为MIT的“伊丽莎白和詹姆士·克利安经济学教授”(The Elizabeth and James Killian Professor of Economics)。
根据IDEAS/RePEc的数据,他是世界范围内论文被引用次数最多的十位经济学家之一。在他的众多论文中,被引用次数最多的是他在2001年和他人合作的论文——“殖民地起源的发展比较:一项经验研究”(The Colonial Origins of Comparative Development: An Empirical Investigation)。2005年,为了表彰阿西莫格鲁在经济学研究中的独创(originality)、彻底(thoroughness)以及多产(prolificacy),他被授予克拉克奖(John Bates Clark Medal)。该奖项只授予那些四十岁以下,且对经济学的思想和知识做出杰出贡献的经济学家。
一项于2011年针对众多经济学教授的调查显示,阿西莫格鲁在他们最喜爱的在世的经济学家排名中位列第三,仅次于保罗·克鲁格曼(Paul Krugman)和格雷格·曼昆(Greg Mankiw)。阿西莫格鲁主要的研究领域是政治经济学(political economy),发展经济学(development economics),经济增长,技术、收入和工资的不平等( technology, income and wage inequality),人力资源和培训(human capital and training),劳动经济学(labour economics)。他最近的工作是研究“制度对于经济发展和政治经济学的影响”(role of institutions in economic development and political economy)。
