As early as the Stone Age, humans used mountain caves as a natural shelter from wind and rain. Later, people used stones, branches, bones, and ice bricks to build habitats for themselves. During World War II, people built military shelters such as air raid shelters to protect civilians in order to prevent air raids. They also used subway stations, tunnels, cellars, and basements as air-raid shelters.
If it is translated into the context of the game, the spatial environment constructed by the game also provides a temporary habitat for humans like a "shelter". Among the works exhibited in the "Player of Beings" exhibition, the artist Zheng Guogu made "Liao Garden" inspired by the game environment in "Age of Empires" and "Simulate Simulator" created by artist aaajiao, which provides players with countless possibilities of space vision, they started from an abstract dimension and entered a wider geographical space through the screen. And the geometric three-dimensional space constructed by "Fun-Dazzle" invites people's bodies and spatial shapes to flexibly participate in the interaction. From this perspective, whether it is virtual electronic game environments in computers and mobile phones, or playgrounds in real life, perhaps we can classify them as "shelters", which provide people with specific safety and rest space.
From the original habitat to the air-raid shelter built to prevent people, then the safe and resting place for now, the functionality of the "shelter" is gradually changing over time. It now appears that the "shelter" seems to be more of a living space that protects and isolates oneself, it is an extension of our bodies. As Gaston Bachelard mentioned in "The Poetics of Space""Home is our corner of the world, and the intention of home reflects the image of intimacy, loneliness, and enthusiasm. We are in the house, and the house is also within us. We construct the house poetically, and the house also constructs us spiritually."Therefore, we would like to take this opportunity to have a discussion with friends, to focus the topic on the house where we live and to further think about "What is the space for games at home?", " What's the private and safe space like?" and cooperate with friend to build a "shelter" of your own, then come and join!

Workshop Timeline

Part 1 Discussion:Discussed by "Player of Beings" and "Shelter". We will learn about the history of the shelters, discuss the works of the game environment by the artists.
Part 2 Construction:Cooperate with group members to build and create a "shelter" that bears the definition of oneself and the partner.
Part 3 Sharing:At the end of the workshop, we also will have a discussion about the shelter we built.
