Under Quarantine amid Covid-19?

International Forum Moves Online!

During the outbreak of the pandemic, face-to-face interaction is reduced or even impossible. Children's art education faces unprecedented challenges. Art museums, educational institutions around the world have been trying to make exhibitions and public programmes possible by moving them online. Although the pandemic has brought about all kinds of difficulties and limitations, we have been trying to cope with it in different ways.

For example, A4 Art Museum started Never-Never Land Project by building an online chat group "Art Heals Lives" and presenting workshops, talks and performance during the pandemic. Moreover, the onsite guided tours of Little Little Guide programme were changed to online but unexpectedly the young guides were more confident, and their voices were more widely heard; Another example is iRead Art-reading Program, in which children improved their expressive ability through 14-day online challenges and 6 online lessons. This unusual time also prompts us to think about the possibility of art education, how to better implement art education when we move into a post-pandemic era, how to turn the pandemic into a breakthrough and translate this into substantive progress that moves art education forward.

For A4 Art Museum, the 2008 Sichuan earthquake was realized as a breakthrough. It made us aware that only “taking actions" can reflect our current and future responsibilities for the children. We started to conduct research and practice on children's education, and that was when we initiated the iSTART Children's Art Festival. Meanwhile, in hope of communicating with the community and educators around the world, iSTART Forum was launched in 2016, which has been developed into three major forums - International Education Forum, Local Education Forum and iHeard Teen Talk. Due to the pandemic, the International Education Forum, which has been held offline will move online this year.

Draw Closer - Action for Co-creation

Art Education for Children

during and post Covid-19 Pandemic

As a member of the International Society for Education through Art (InSEA), LUXELAKES·A4 Art Museum is honored to have the International Education Forum affiliated by InSEA and to participate in the InSEA Asian Regional Congress as the pre-conference. While countries around the world are suggesting "social distancing" due to the pandemic, InSEA puts forward the "Draw Closer" initiative, which aims to call for unity, let art moves our heart closer to each others', fight against the virus in the pandemic, and respond to the issues in art education and social reality in a broader dimension.

From 14th November onwards, art educators and professionals from InSEA, University of Lapland in Finland, Hangzhou Normal University, University of North Texas in the United States, Echo Magazine from Taiwan, China, Southwest University, Chiba University and Tokyo Gakugei University in Japan, Hanyang University of Korea will come together and discuss art education for children during and post Covid-19, explore the ways to get closer to each other. Every week, surrounding the four subjects: "Draw Closer through Co-Creation", "Inoperative Learning in Art Education ", "Inspiratiion from Tradition”, and "Voice from 'Neighbor’", we will invite speakers to share their thoughts on the current issues in art education, and their research and practice on fields such as inoperative learning, art therapy, traditional toys and craft education, Chinese agricultural civilization and ecological art education. After each keynote speech, there will be a round table forum, bringing together different perspectives, joining researchers and art educators in an interesting exchange of ideas, aming to provide new theoretical insights and fuel innoative pracitces. Meanwhile, more online audiences are welcome to join the discussion, so as to jointly promote the innovative practices in art and education. What new ideas will the activists bring to the forum this time? Let's look forward to the exchange of ideas and take action together.

“Education through art is a natural means of learning at all periods of the development of the individual, fostering values and disciplines essential for full intellectual, emotional and social development of human beings in a community."

——InSEA Constitution
